If this were the first day of in-person class, I'd give a bit of this as a one-minute spiel in front of the classroom-- but we're fully online, so I'll type it out for you instead.
I'm Dr. Adam Nemmers, an Associate Professor here at Lamar University in the Department of English and Modern Languages. I've been at Lamar since 2017, when I moved to Beaumont, where I still reside and live. Generally I teach classes on American literature, though I also do some composition and theory, depending on departmental needs. I should also state that I'm planning to work on a book project on American Existentialism, probably. In that book I'm hoping to look at the multi-ethnic dimension of the work, which is part of the reason why we have such an ethnically diverse syllabus (the other reason is that it's good pedagogy). So, I'll certainly be offering my own observations as well as mining your insight for any ideas that may prove valuable fodder for me to write about later on.
On the personal side, as I mentioned I live in Beaumont, with my wife of one year. We have a very suburban existence right now, perhaps a big reason why I taught an online class on American Suburban Literature last spring. I'm originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and usually travel there to see family once or twice a year. In my free time camping, playing and watching sports, board games and beers, and generally trying to find adventures and explore the SETX region (if you have any tips, or ideas, let me know).
You should be able to see my picture in my profile attached-- I'd encourage you to upload a pic of yourself as well!
Anyway, I'm glad to have this class as a companion to my summer-- always nice to have something to read, write about, and chew on mentally as we go about our more pedestrian business.
Some "fun" facts about me:
I'm pretty good at ping-pong.
I have two different kinds of mouthwash!
I hope one day to vacation on a houseboat
Looking forward to meeting y'all!
