I have often heard the word, "Existentialism" but never quite understood it. After reading the text, I am fascinated by the concept. While I hold different beliefs on some of the elements of existentialism, from a literary and academic standpoint, it is a complex yet intriguing idea. I began to realize that the topic of Existentialism, thought not clearly stated, is in several literary works I have read and I am excited to not only learn more about it, but to read texts that revolve around it.

The same thing struck me. I have heard the word existentialism thrown around, and its ideas that follow, but I never realized how much I have actually come across it. I can't say I fully agree with all of the ideas presented, but I would go to say no existentialist fully agrees with one another. It is wild to me how varied this concept is. In the reading, we're told Carson McCullers said "Death is always the same, but each man dies in his own way." I think this agrees with much of the ideas surrounding existentialism. Existentialism is always presented to man in the same way, but each man has his own idea of it. Not one of us has lived the same lives as another, but each one of us has struggled at some point with these ideas. I think that is a remarkable constant. I'm looking forward to exploring this more.

Some great responses here to begin, and yes, we're all sort of struggling through this together at this point.
And one thing I would like to stress is that I'm not trying to convert anyone to existentialism or assert that you should believe or disbelieve anything. Rather, the aim here is to have you engage with these ideas and to form your own opinion, and especially to understand how this philosophy had a tremendous impact on American literature during the middle of last century.
In fact, existentialism has fallen out of fashion (beginning back in the 1970s and 1980s) and really has not had a big impact in a long while!
