This was my favorite reading from this week. I think the length of the story was short enough and didn't feel dragged out, while still being detailed. This evoked some strong feelings for me honestly. It almost felt like you were experiencing this with this man. The whole time routing for him and hoping he is able to find is way back to his wife and kids. Just as you feel that sense of closure, it's immediately stripped away. This story brings up a lot of questions I think. What does happen after we die? Is it like a "life flashing before your eyes" moment? Or, like in this story, do you simply not know you're dead? Or perhaps it's like a dream that abruptly ends. I am interested to see other's thoughts on this story.

One thing I noticed about this story is the man never thought in his last moments about what would happen to him after dying. He is solely focused on his family and his life and trying to save it. Because we don't get to see what the man believes or thinks about death, it leaves it up for the reader to wonder what happens after we die. All we know is that he does not want to die and he has a life worth living.

This is an interesting point! I really like this perspective because you are right, we are only getting just his perspective on this situation. He is not aware that he is dead and therefore does not express any of his own thoughts about death. Because of this, all we are really seeing is what is most important to him. We also see the lengths he would have gone to return to his family and how desperately he wanted to be with them. This, to me, makes this story kind of depressing when we realize he did not survive.

Yes, I think the topic of existentialism can be a bit depressing, depending on how one looks at it. We can focus on the meaninglessness of life or how we can find meaning and purpose in life.
