"The sentinels, facing the banks of the stream, might have been statues to adorn the bridge." This quote sparked an interest with the feelings of the sentinels. They are there to prevent anyone from stopping the current event. Although they are focused, it is interesting to be complice of the action that was seen as normal in that time-period. Do you think they had any empathy for the man standing at the other side of the board? I believe some might had the empathy towards these men. However, because it might be an uncommon opinion or stance. It might not be worth it to admit it. Do you think that they were so focused on protecting that they subconsciously blocked the events out of their mind? It might be easier to brainwash yourself that this is the right thing to do for them anyway.

I think that because this was a time of war and the entire country was in a unique mental state, it's possible the sentinels were numb to occurrences like this. They probably witnessed a lot of horrific and unjust events, this was just another to add to the list. I'm guessing the Civil War and how it greatly affected everyone is a large contributor to American Existentialism, in a lot of ways. It caused people to face hard truths and evaluate and reevaluate themselves, as an individual and as a citizen of a conflicted nation.

Hey Shelby, I can see the correlation between the war and the emotion which fills the air due to them being in conflict. However, I wonder if this is a genuine thought for them to be okay with it? or are there external factors besides the war like maybe officials that influence in this thought process. I think that existentialism plays a broader part during this time because people can choose their own destiny or their own world. But in this case, are they really free to make those choices during the war? I would probably say no because those who are higher in the military are making those decisions for them.
