Good evening everyone. I'm sorry I'm a little late in posting here. I took last week as a break from everything, and just got back into all things "school" this week.
I'm a high school English teacher who just completed my 11th year in education. I majored in English Literature at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I also received minors in Biology and Drama. I worked as an Embryologist for almost 10 years before I decided to switch careers and go back to get my Masters in Secondary Education and teaching licensure. I worked as an English, Speech & Debate, and Theatre teacher in Denver for 4 years before moving down here 7 years ago. I currently teach 9th grade regular and Honors English. I decided to go back for my 2nd masters in English Literature 2 years ago so I can teach our dual credit English classes in person instead of our students taking them online.
I currently live in Nederland with my 2 fur babies, Mae, a 7-year old German Short-Haired Pointer (GSP), and Millie, a 3 month old Lab GSP mix. In my spare time I'm a regular at my Crossfit gym, facilitate a banned book club for women, and love to take drives in my Mini Cooper. I'm 100% a mountain, snow, skiing, hiking, cold-weather girl, so I try to get back home to Colorado as often as I can.

What's on the syllabus for your Banned Book Club for Women? We are reading Play it as it Lays later this semester... not sure if that ever got banned

We're only on our 3rd month, but so far we've read & discussed "The Kite Runner" by: Khalid Houssini, "The Other Wes Moore" by: Wes Moore, and "The Glass Castle" by: Jeannette Walls. I posted 3 options for next month: "The Things They Carried" by : Tim O'Brien, "Brave New World" by: Aldus Huxley, and "The Color Purple" by: Alice Walker. Tim O'Brien won that one. This all spawned from a graduate presentation I did last semester over Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" during my Women in Literature course.
We're focusing primarily on novels that have been banned in a high school setting, and most likely in Texas, because it's what I have the most intimate knowledge of. What's great about the group is that it's comprised of women of all different backgrounds and of all ages. I'm the only literature teacher, and only 1/3 teachers in the group (the others are SPED & Drama). We also have a pretty good mix of conservatives and liberals, so it really helps us to engage in educated conversation and practice listening to other's opinions on the topics. It's been extremely rewarding so far, and we're averaging 12-15 people per group, which is very exciting!
