As I was watching the video of Sisyphus and how he outsmarted the gods I wondered. What was Sisyphus role in this life? What was his purpose all along? What was the point of all the actions he was performing? Was it just purely prideful to outsmart the gods? Was he a fair ruler?
At the moment of playing tricks with the gods, it revealed his weaknesses. In the end, he was punished to push the boulder but could have stopped at some point. He kept pushing the boulder up the mountain for the purpose of not letting the gods win.
So, was his purpose to be a ruler? or a challenge to the gods? He has no consequences until Zeus took matters into his own hands. We could say that Sisyphus was a challenge for the gods to teach them a lesson. When understanding Greek mythology, we have to remember that Hermes was known to be good at tricks. Could Sisyphus be influenced by Hermes as a medium of revenge?
