So, two episodes caught my attention from the first half of the novel--- might as well consider them here, as the second half of the novel promises to be even more creepy and strange.
In one episode beginning in Chapter 6, Monina (the three year old daughter of Guinevere) stares at Lovett and calls him "good-looking." She repeats it later on, so it's not just a random childish babble, unless she's imitating her mother? Then in Chapter 7, Monina shows up completely naked and begins to "coquette" around, and Lovett says "her body was extraordinary" and spends several sentences admiring her "slender curves." (sorry if you just caught the ick).
Later, when Lannie shows up, she spends some time making love with Mike in Chapter 17. Oddly, the episode is described as such: "She fumbled her way into my arms weeping piteously. I might have comforted a child. .... I held her and rocked her slowly..... We were not lovers, but father and child."
Anyone care to venture what's going on here? Since Mike is the commonality between these two, I'm going to venture this has something to do with his own psychology and sexual deviance?
