Barbary Shore, thought interesting at first, became dull once the debate started. To be honest, it just felt like socialist rabble. There are some good aspects of the novel however. One thing I found interesting is McLeod and his character change. At first he seemed so sure of himself and others, he was a riddle to be solved but then once Hollingsworth found him out, he began to lose it. We see this play out when McLeod is pacing around the room, questioning himself. There is a never-ending stream of consciousness throughout this scene of McLeod spiraling out of control. Mailer does well presenting McLeod’s descent into a kind of madness.
