This is the point in the novel where I started to note a lot of existential moments that Fred was having. In part 1 I noted a section where it said " His emotions subsided and he came to himself. What was he saying? A sense of the life he had left aboveground crushed him with a sense of guilt. Would not God strike him dead for having such thoughts?" So, it seems like he had a belief in God before going underground, but then obviously, towards the end that faith was fleeting. Was the choir singing somehow connected to all of this? He goes back to that a lot, talking about how he would hear the choir, then wouldn't. Was this his moving away from faith?
On page 109 it says "Once or twice he made an effort to take hold of himself, to shake off this weird feeling, to go back to his former state, for he was afraid of this strange land; but the task of eluding these new forces was difficult and he shrugged his shoulders in surrender." Is that him trying to go back to his faith in God?
I'm sorry for all of the questions, but this book really made me think a lot.
