After watching the video on Anomie and the video on relocation/termination, I thought about the section of my Intro to Education class in which we learned about including diversity in the classroom and curriculum. One of the things we looked at in this section was the rate of high school dropouts across several demographics and the one with the highest percentage of dropouts was American/Alaskan Natives. One of the reasons provided was that people across different cultures and backgrounds don’t see themselves represented in their school’s curriculum/staff and that can lead to that sense of disconnection and then loneliness.

I have taken the same class and am trying to become a teacher. As a white man, I never even noticed how catered school was to those like me. I did not understand how someone could feel alienated by a place like school. The more I went through that class, and the more we go over stuff like Anomie, the more I realized how this idea will be something I never fully understand. That doesn't mean it's not prevalent, and as a future teacher I need to do my part in making the classroom welcoming and fulfilling to all.

When the school system is catered to a group of people, it is often assumed that others around you who are different share the same experiences as you. However, education and diversity is an important factor for growth. Like in the novel we are reading, it can be hard for a group of majority to change their thoughts or be open to understand different outlooks. Especially, if the majority has an uniform thought or belief.
