I'm sorry I'm posting early, but I will be at the bottom of the Grand Canyon when this is all due.
On page 83, after Maria has gotten her abortion, I noted a part where she felt like a huge weight had been lifted off and she was "happy." I didn't see many instances of this throughout the novel, which is maybe why it stood out.
Didion says: "He gave her one envelope of tetracycline capsules and another of ergot tablets and by six o'clock of that hot October afternoon she was out of the bedroom in Encino and back in the car with the man in the white duck pants. The late sound seemed warm and benevolent on her skin and everything she saw looked beautiful, the summer pulse of life itself Mande manifest. As she backed out of the driveway she smiled radiantly at her companion."
This is written so perfectly as a description of how someone feels when a problem that had been weighing on them feels. It's not directly saying her feelings, but as I tell my students all the time- through what the character is DOING we get how they are FEELING. I love this.

I do agree with how rare this moment was throughout the novel. Her life has been about struggle and criticism from others. I believe she feels relieved during a time when abortion was frowned upon. During this pre-roe era, it was intense for a woman to live a livelihood and be promiscuous without any harsh judgment. To this day, it is something that is still taboo but at a different level. The feelings of each character can be described vividly, and this transports those actions to the reader's mind. I think that this is why books are perfect for entertainment.

I also agree. At no real point in the novel did I notice a time that Maria was "happy". I think maybe she self-medicated enough that perhaps she forgot she was unhappy, but I most certainly did not see a happy period. The only time I may have gotten a slight sense of something close to that was when she was driving on the highway, and that was likely because she was in control of what was happening at that moment in time
