I'm sorry for posting early, but I will be at the bottom of the Grand Canyon on a rafting trip when this post is due.
On page 144, I noted when the author says "about 500 arrivals from Tanforan were INDUCTED every other day." I know that Okubo had probably used the term "inducted" before, but for some reason it stood out to me in this moment. When I think of being "inducted" into an organization, it carries a positive connotation for me. However, in this instance, I'm assuming that Okubo meant it in a negative way. Or was she being sarcastic, using it as to make it SEEM positive, but where we all know that it's actually negative?
Did anyone else notice this, or have some insight into it? I'm sure there are other times when the word "inducted" implies something negative, but I'm not sure about when or where. I'm "inducted" in NHS. Sports players and musicians are "inducted" into the Hall of Fame. I've never heard of someone being "inducted" in an organization as punishment! Thoughts?

Great find, Renee! I think the allusion is to page 11, when the narrator's brother, "who was already in the army, wrote letters full of wisecracks: "Better get ready for induction, kids. It's your turn now!" So that's where the sarcasm comes in, I'd say.
I suppose there is a certain way in which these are similar. Being conscripted into the military happens against your will, is performed by a more powerful governmental authority, and is done with a certain class of people in mind, in an orderly, organized fashion. We could think of the "internment" process in the same way-- and ironically, it's the military that's superintending the entire process.
We'll be looking more specifically at the "banality of evil" in another thread, but that's what's so fascinating to me about this-- it's not a one-off, knee-jerk, barbarian process: it's all done in a very legal and above-board fashion, complete with a bureaucracy and underlying structure...
