What I was able to grasp from the novel was symbolism from the the moon and sea. In times of adversity, it is important for those to have a believe in something because it changes you point of view. Antonio's mother is named Luna, which can be related to the representation of moon throughout the story. The father's name is Márez, which is similar to mares=sea. We can see the correlation of the two parental figures in this book and the impact they have on Antonio. If you know anything about the relationship between sea and moon, it is the impact they have on each other. When the moon is at a certain phase, it affects the sea current and strength. This can be to affect Antonio deeply.

That is an awesome point. I would have never connected Márez to the sea, but it makes great sense. A common theme in this novel is that of Antonio being pulled each and every direction, being presented with so many choices. While of course it's not only his mother and father pulling him, it is interesting to view Antonio as the tide, constantly shifting this way and that. Thank you for the insight. I would've regretted missing that.

Great connection, Diana! So we have the sea and moon, which actually go together very well, and helps us to see the connection between Antonio's parents. Agree with Garrison that this represents the natural forces having a tug-of-war within and without!
