As I read this novel, I see some parallels between the side characters and the characters of Hemingway's "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place". The brothers, in particular Andrew, reminds me of the older man in the short story who spent his days drinking. Andrew, more than likely affected negatively by the war, seems to want to indulge in his vices to escape a more painful reality. The dad, I liken to the older waiter who is more jaded with life, but, maybe out of a feeling of practicality, just wants to work, come home drink, etc., without really taking any risks or embracing any of the exuberances of life. I am sure other parallels between characters that we have read through the semester can be drawn, but something about this short story was a closer link to me.

I like finding these connections between different readings, or just simularities in life that don't always feel like they should be there. While you could never get a true answer, it is fun to ask some what-if questions. Like maybe a more realtable comparisson for the old man in a clean, well-lighted place is Antonio himself. This old man clearly has struggled with loss of some sort to be where he is. Maybe Antonio, through his traumatic childhood, gained a distaste for life that was never relieved. It's a little silly, but I think cultivating stories in your head somewhat aids in memorization and understanding of ideas.

I can see the parallels between stories. However, andrew is more like the man who is being impatient because it only cares about him. I would say that he is more like the waiter who just wants to go home. Although, it may seem as if he would never care about anything because of the effects the war has had. There is certainly a correlation in between the short story and this novel.
