My plan for my essay is to focus solely on Play It As It Lays where I want to zero in on the feminist brand of Dread. I have not formulated this idea too throughly yet as I am still in the research stage, however I am finding some good sources to corroborate my budding argument.

Interesting idea, Gillian! And I'm sorry for not assigning more female characters/ female-authored texts... there just aren't many to choose from! (You might look at Sylvia Path/ The Bell Jar as well)
One thing you might consider is how women may have an additional layer of "natural dread" insofar as their reproductive abilities will necessitate their experiencing pain through childbirth and menstruation. I'm thinking specifically of Maria here, how she knows that her body will be a vehicle for reproduction, and perhaps she winds up dreading it? Just an idea-- feel free to ignore if it doesn't fit.
